If you are looking for the basics of chemical exfoliation according to skin type and tone keep reading!!

Chemical exfoliation can be beneficial for various skin types and Fitzpatrick types, but it is essential to know how to use it safely and effectively. Here’s an overview of how each skin type and Fitzpatrick type can approach exfoliation.

Fitzpatrick Skin Types:

  • Type I & II (Very Fair to Fair): These skin types are more prone to sunburn and may need lower concentrations and less frequent exfoliation

  • Type III & IV (Light Brown to Olive): Can generally tolerate moderate concentrations and frequencies of exfoliation.

  • Type V & VI (Dark Brown to Black): These skin types tend to have a lower count of ceramides in the skin which can lead to dryness. These skin types should hydrate with a hydrating toner before exfoliation.

Fitzpatrick III-VI are prone to hyperpigmentation and should be using an SPF 50 if they are going to begin chemical exfoliation. They should also begin as though they are a sensitive skin type.

Sensitive Skin:

  • Proceed with caution and begin with the gentlest form chemical exfoliant, PHAs, or low concentration AHAs.

  • Patch test new products and start with minimal frequency such as once bi-weekly and slowly increase according to your skins tolerance.

  • Monitor your skin for any signs of irritation and adjust accordingly.

Oily/Acne Prone Skin:

  • BHAs like salicylic acid and mandelic acid are excellent choices as they are designed to penetrate oil and unclog pores.

  • BHAs can be extremely drying to the skin. If you have sensitive or dry skin accompanied by acne or excess oil begin at a low concentration.

  • Start with 1 time per week and increase based on skin tolerance and the improvement in acne.

Normal:

  • Chemical exfoliation is generally well tolerated with these skin types.

  • AHAs like glycolic acid and lactic acid, as long as BHAs like salicylic acid are commonly used.

  • Start with a low concentration and gradually increase as tolerated. It is highly recommended not to exceed 3 times a week with a chemical exfoliation.

  • Use 1-3 times per week according to your skins response.

Dry Skin:

  • Proceed with caution as chemical exfoliation can potentially exacerbate dryness.

  • Opt for lactic acid which can also hydrate the skin, PHAs which is the most gentle and newest form of chemical exfoliation.

  • Use humectant serums such as hyaluronic acid then moisturizer immediately after exfoliation to prevent further dryness.

  • Limit exfoliation to 1-2 times per week initially and adjust based on how your skin responds.
